Our PurposeThe purpose of the District Board of Ministry (DBM) is to aid and guide all candidates on the Los Angeles District in preparation for the various forms of ministry. The board’s responsibility extends to licensees who are enrolled in colleges as well as those enrolled in district study courses. In addition, this board is charged with the task of fostering continuing education on the district for ordained ministers. A summary of the duties of the DBM is found in Manual 228 and 230.2-31.4
Course RequirementsThe courses needed for ordination differ according to the mode of education taken by the candidate. Candidates for district license must have completed the course on the History and Polity of the Church of the Nazarene (Manual), a minimum of six (6) courses (verified by transcripts), held a local license for a minimum of one (1) year and receive a recommendation from their local church board to receive a first time district license. During their first year, each licensee and their spouse is asked to attend a special regional licensed minister retreat at PLNU in San Diego (October). A minimum of two courses must be completed in each subsequent year (and verified by transcripts) to qualify for renewal of district license. The course of study must be completed within 10 years from the granting of the first district license, or the student will be dropped from enrollment with the DBM. Exceptions to this must be recommended to the district assembly, including a specific time limit, by the DBM and subject to the approval of the general superintendent in jurisdiction. (Manual 427.4) In 2008, the interview dates will be January 8, 2008 (interviewing possible candidates for ordination and new applicants), February 5, 2008 (interviewing renewal candidates and new applicants). Both of these interview meetings will be held at the Los Angeles District Office, 225 E. Santa Clara St., Ste. 300, Arcadia, CA 91006. On Thursday, April 10, 2008 (interviewing renewal candidates) in Northridge and San Luis Obispo. Appointments are set on a first come basis and must be made by calling the acting chairman of the DBM, Dr. Chuck Smith, cell 818-489-8995. All new applicants and renewal applicants [who have not graduated from the course of study (COS)] must submit transcripts to the Secretary of the DBM for evaluation, prior to their interview appointment, to verify that two courses have been completed during the assembly year. Transcripts for coursework in progress at the time of the interview, or for which the student is enrolled, should be sent to the Secretary of the DBM no later than one month prior to District Assembly each year in order to receive consideration in that assembly year.
